A FORMER squadron leader attended the celebrations at Todmorden Town Hall to congratulate the new Mayor, who used to be one of his cadets.

Bill Stafford, a former warrant officer at 2447 Calder Valley Squadron, was among the guests at the Mayor’s Day event at which Coun Abid Hussain become the town’s new civic head.

Coun Hussain used to be a cadet in the squadron, based in Charlestown, in the late 1970s and early 80s.

Mr Stafford said: “I’m so proud of him.

“He still calls me uncle, which is a term of endearment.”
