Pupils step into councillors’ shoes as they learn history of town hall

CHILDREN became councillors for a day during a visit to Todmorden Town Hall.

Mayor of Todmorden Coun Margareta Holmstedt and Mayoress Coun Dorothy Jordan gave youngsters from Castle Hill and Shade schools a tour of the historic building, during which they sat in the council chamber and had a chance to ask the civic team some questions.

The children also explored other areas of the town hall including the Mayor’s Parlour where they signed the visitors book and looked at the many items of the town’s memorabilia which are on display.

They saw the gallery of photos of Todmorden’s Mayors in the committee room and were shown around the ballroom.

The tour finished with a look at the cells in the basement before heading back upstairs for refreshments.

Former town councillor Phil Walters, who led sections of the tour, said: “It was nice to see that they were really interested in knowing about their town hall and how much it had changed over the years.”

Children at Cornholme School have also been in touch with the Mayor, writing to ask for her help in getting some improved play facilities in Cornholme.

The town council has replied to the children saying their request will be considered at the time of the next round of refurbishment.
