RACING pigs will spearhead the sepcial attractions running through the day at Todmorden Agricultural Show next weekend.

And these racers have pedigree, with the six rare breed animals which make up Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs, likely to catch the crowd’s attention as they bid to be first to the finishing line at the showground, Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, on Saturday, June 18.

Farmers Joseph and Jessica Fossett, who look after the pigs, say the animals love the event and the attention they get.

“You can expect lots of hilarity and commotion. The pigs enjoy it and they get lots of attention from people which they like,” said Mrs Fossett.

The pigs almost have their own racing colours as taking part will be Gloucester Old Spots, which are white with black spots and floppy ears, saddlebacks, which are white with a black stripe over their shoulder and Tamworth crosses, which are orange with long snouts.

They will also be on display through the day and the public are invited to stroke the sociable animals, or tickle them behind the ears.

Opening the special events will be the Elaine Hill Sheepdog Display team, also aimed at pleasing all age groups of spectators.

Aimed at educating as well as entertaining, children are invited into the arena to take part as the dogs display their herding skills, shepherding geese around a sheepdog trial course, ducks being directed around an obstacle course and a parade of ducklings to conclude the event.

Taking to the air will be one of the largest falconry displays in the country, with Phil and Emma Gibbon of the Ridgeside Falconry and Lurcher Displays, taking in flying demonstrations and a static display of around 15 to 20 birds of prey from all around the world.

The lurchers demonstrate their turn of speed and a highlight is set to be a race between a lurcher and a hawk.

For music fans, Todmorden Community Band will be playing their music on the bandstand in three sessions through the day.

Vintage tractor and Military vehcile parades complete the entertainment.
