PUPILS achieved a record number of A* grades in another excellent set of GCSE results for Todmorden High School.

Fifty per cent of pupils achieved at least one A or A* grade and many students exceeded their personal targets.

Headteacher Helen Plaice said: “Within this year’s statistics can be found a significant number of very impressive achievements, both in terms of individual students who have exceeded their personal targets and in subject results where we see a consistently high quality of teaching and learning being maintained.

“We pride ourselves in knowing our students well, and the vast majority have achieved results that will allow them to access the next stage of learning that is right for them.”

She admitted being a little disappointed with the figure for five A*-C grades this year.

“Last year’s figures were exceptional and it would have been hard to improve on the outstanding levels of progress that gained us recognition as one of the top 100 most improved schools in the country by the Department for Education,” she said.

“However, we will always set our expectations high and set targets that will stretch even our most able students.”

Last September, Year ten pupils started two GCSE short courses in a range of foundation subjects.

Ninety-two per cent of them gained at least one GCSE grade C or above and many achieved two or more.

“They should be very proud of their achievements,” she said.

“It is good to see that the final results are so positive. I have every confidence that this success will spur the students on to even better things in the second year of key stage four.”

She paid tribute to the staff for the support they provide to pupils.

“It’s quite humbling to look around and see these teachers who have come in during their holidays because they care so much about the students,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to work in a place like this.

“There are no other jobs where you would get this sort of payback. You know you have made a difference when you see students achieving, going out into the world and moving on to the next step.”

Among the students celebrating were Jacob Hodgkinson, who got the grades he needed to secure his place at the Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College in Leicestershire.

“I’m very excited about that,” he said.

His mum, Gill, said: “I’m so proud of him.”

She thanked all their family and friends for their support.

Rebecca Gibson was “really happy” with her three A*s, five As and two Bs. She is moving on to study A-levels in the high school’s sixth form.

Nationally the GCSE pass rate dropped slightly to 92.7 per cent but the number of entries awarded an A*-C grade increased to 69.8 per cent.
