Reflection on his life and work

At their May monthly meeting, members of the Todmorden Ladies Probus club were given a fascinating insight into the life of Percy Shaw by guest speaker Mr John Hargreaves.

Percy Shaw, inventor of the “cats eye” reflective road stud was born in Halifax in 1890 and came from humble origins. He left school at 13 and received no scientific education but by the 1960s his invention was described in parliament as “the most brilliant in the interest of road safety”.

By his death in 1976 the studs marked traffic lanes of roads all over the world.
