Shawn’s marathon by night

Ready to go - Shawn, right, and Keith
Ready to go - Shawn, right, and Keith

A runner is tackling a night marathon to raise money for a friend’s good cause.

Shawn Frewin, of Hebden Bridge, is taking the challenge, at Kielder Forest in Northumberland later this month, to further boost fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, begun by Todmorden friend Keith Rudman.

Keith’s autobiography, Living With A Killer - A Life With Cystic Fibrosis, has so far raised a whopping £11,000 for the unit, which has provided care for Keith when he has needed it.

When Keith, now 52, was born with the condition, his parents were warned that that he might not live past his 20th birthday.

His book describes medical developments in managing the condition and the strict physiotherapy regime Keith undertakes each day, but which allows him to live and enjoy as normal a life as possible, including a challenging career heading a major department store in Rochdale and achieving a high level of success on the bowling green, all with the positive attitude of concentrating on what he can do rather than what he can’t.

Shawn has bowled with Keith for Todmorden Park, and another friend, Kirsty Sutcliffe, who had cystic fibrosis, passed away some years ago, so having decided to train for and run a marathon, Shawn wanted to use the opportunity to help those with the condition. “I needed to get fit and a friend of mine asked me if I fancied doing a marathon, and if I was doing it I wanted to do it for a good cause,” said Shawn. “It is in Northumberland at Kielder Forest and is a night race - challenging, but you can see millions of stars on a clear night - a bit over marathon length at 26 and a half miles.”

Since beginning training Shawn has lost about a stone and a half and is in good shape as the race, on Saturday, March 26, approaches. He describes Keith as an inspiration and has a target of £1,000. Having raised £600 through a first crowdfunding page, Shawn has set up a second - https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/shawn-frewin-2 - for people to help complete or pass the total. There are also sponsorship forms around.

Keith says the site has had 40,000 hits, helping achieve his aim of raising awareness of the condition, and he is delighted Shawn is helping out - “it’s fantastic of him,” he said.
