People from across the north of England are descending on a Hebden Bridge studios in the run-up to Christmas to test their creative skills.

The growing reputation of Northlight Art Studios, which is at Valley Road, Hebden Bridge, as a regional centre for visual art and crafts education is reflected in the popularity of its diverse day and weekend workshop programme, said co-ordinator Don Myers.

Mr Myers said the workshops’ reputation was attracting artists of all abilities from far and wide. Some are run through the studio’s Back Door Education scheme, and all are very popular.

“These high quality workshops are now attracting both local people and those from across the north of England and beyond, keen to explore their creative side and to spend time in the upper Calder Valley area,” Mr Myers said.

“The October programme offers a real variety of experience in an intensive and rewarding day workshop format.

“They are an excellent alternative for those who can’t commit to a regular longer course.”

Workshops are led by experienced practising artists in small groups.

On Saturday textile designer Sally Darlington leads a batik workshop in which wax and dyes are used to create this unique effect.

Inspiration will come from the shapes and colours found in African textiles.

Some tie-dye techniques will also be sampled.

If you prefer something more experimental then Petra McCarthy’s Drawing Day ‘From Here to There’ on Saturday, October 19 is an exciting opportunity.

This is the first of a diverse series of drawing days in which very different artists will share their passion and approaches to drawing.

In this unusual workshop painter Petra McCarthy will lead you on a mixed media drawing journey with maps and mapping as a starting point.

Rounding off the October offer is a mosaic workshop on Sunday, October 20.

This is a great chance to work with designer and public artist Lesley Fallais, learning the basics of making mosaics for interior and external spaces.

Mr Myers said: “As well as making a small mosaic on the day you will also find out something of the history and contemporary use of mosaic.”
