Ten hours of delays as flooding shuts road

MOTORISTS faced disruption at the weekend as heavy rainfall caused flooding in the upper Calder Valley.

The A646 near Callis Bridge, Hebden Bridge, and at Eastwood, Todmorden, was flooded during Saturday’s downpour.

The road was closed for ten hours between 1.30pm to 11.30pm to allow a clear up to take place, causing serious delays to motorists and public transport.

Workers from the Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, the fire brigade, Calderdale Council, the Highways Agency and the Environment Agency worked tirelessly for hours to pump thousands of gallons of water and clean away tonnes of mud, silt and debris from the road.

The road was closed at the roundabout in Todmorden town centre in order to prevent large vehicles getting stuck further along Halifax Road, causing more disruption and stretching resources.
