Two to receive citizenship award

THE town council has announced the winners of the Citizenship Award for Todmorden 2012.

At last week’s Todmorden Town Council meeting, Rod Wainwright and Jeffrey Hunter were revealed as this year’s recipients of the award.

Coun David O’Neill, chairman of the citizenship sub-committee, said: “Rod Wainwright has for many years worked with Todmorden Lions, the Society for the Blind, the Talking Newspaper for Todmorden and various sports associations around the town.

“Jeffrey Hunter has worked with Churches Together and especially the Youth Caravan.”

Mr Wainwright and Mr Hunter will be presented with their awards by outgoing Mayor of Todmorden Coun Richard White at the annual Mayor’s Day on May 12.

Eight nominations were received for the award.

Coun O’Neill said: “The town council would like to thank members of the public for taking part in the process and putting forward names for this year’s Citizenship Awards for Todmorden.

“Individuals or organisations are chosen to receive awards because they have given exceptional service to the township of Todmorden.

“They have shown true community spirit.

“This could be by working with young people or the elderly, helping those in need, keeping an area tidy or it could be that they have given time over a number of years to a worthwhile cause.”
