A pub gutted by last summer’s flooding is set to roar back to life as new owners carry out a major refurbishment after buying the venue last week.
The Golden Lion, Fielden Square, Todmorden, has been shut since last summer and had been on the market for several months.
But Mood Pubs has stepped in with the aim of re-opening it as a community pub this summer.
Peter Mason, director of Mood Pubs, said: “We want to set it up with as much input as we can from the local community.
“It will take two or three months to get it up and running.
“Ideally, we would like a couple to run it.
“The focus is a community pub with a strong food dimension.
“We will keep the Golden Lion name. It’s a historic name and we are proud to take that name on.”
Although the building was in a poor condition when he first saw it, Peter said he could see it had great potential.
“When I first saw the building, it was in a terrible state,” he said.
“There was the flood and also a leak from the roof.
“Most people looking round thought it would be impossible, but that’s the challenge. We always try to see the potential in places.
“Nearly all the places we have bought have been write-offs.
“They are all working and vibrant pubs now.
“I liked the building. I like things with history. This place has tremendous history.
“It has provided a key role in the history of Todmorden. It has provided various functions from a post office to a coaching house.
“I like the size of the building, and its situation next to the canal.
“It’s really our style of pub. It’s much more tailored to the local community.
“The more I happened to meet people, they said what a nice town Todmorden is.
“I started looking at the local groups and it’s a very vibrant local community.”
Peter said the layout inside will not be changed much.
He hopes to re-instate the outdoor space and provide a coffee area where “people can watch the world go by”.
Flood gates are also being installed to help protect the building from any future flooding.
Peter is inviting any local groups who would like to be involved with the community aspect of the pub to get in touch by emailing email@example.com
