We must plan for the cuts with care

I attended the recent Ward Forum and posed a question about the further £27 million in cuts that Calderdale will have to implement next year.

I simply asked how Todmorden’s share of these could be absorbed without affecting frontline services. To my dismay the answer was a simple reiteration of this year’s budget.

Clearly we need to keep a close eye on what our elected representatives are doing, but it’s also important to get involved in drawing up the Town Plan.

Clearly money is available for physical improvement schemes like the one at Lever Street, and I am all in favour of the plan to attract lottery money to preserve and enhance our wonderful Town Hall.

But if at the same time we lose key services, the town will become a poorer place to live.
