SENIOR football round-up.
Todmorden Borough 1
Longridge Town 4
W Lancs Challenge Cup 2
HIGH-flying Town underlined their top of the table credentials with victory at Bellholme.
Borough performed well against one of the best footballing sides that they have faced in the last couple of years but didn't quite have the firepower to match them.
After a very even opening ten to 15 minutes the visitors took the lead when Borough spurned three opportunities to clear the ball and paid the price.
They fell further behind 15 minutes later when a free-kick was conceded on the edge of the box and, although goalkeeper Paul Terry got both hands to the kick he couldn't keep the ball out of the net.
Borough created a couple of half chances but, despite the efforts of Jamie Cattermole in midfield, had little to show.
Some harsh words at halftime, along with a reshuffle with Chris Kaye pushed forward alongside Oliver Wood in a 4-4-2 formation saw the home side pose much more of a threat in the second-half.
However, Town extended their lead after a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
Danny Skwarek and Alistair Harrison were performing well at the back and Borough began to create some good chances.
Wood pulled them back into the tie with a sharp finish and Nathan Adams and Wood combined to send Kay clear but the Town goalkeeper saved well with his legs.
Soon after wood was sent clear by a ball over the top, he just beat the keeper to the ball but pushed his shot wide.
A breakaway gave Town a fourth goal and put a rather unflattering slant on the scoreline.
Whinney Hill Res 4
Todmorden Borough Res 6
West Lancashire League
COMPLACENCY was the order of the day as Borough's second string dominated the game but found themselves in a goal shootout.
They opened the scoring when Ryan Baxter was alert to the possibilities of a quick free kick and set up the goal for Terry Lowe.
Borough were caught out defensively and the home side equalised within five minutes but Danny Lively took the ball from the restart, weaved past three defenders and shot across the goalkeeper to restore Borough's lead.
Despite almost total dominance that was the scoring for the half.
Hill rallied at the break and it was somewhat against the run of play that Borough extended their lead through Justin Adams.
The home side then struck twice in quick succession to level the scores before substitute Joe Whitham scored.
Whinney equalised again and were a little unlucky to concede again when Joe Hanson's cross drifted into the back of the net.
Whitham rounded off a disjointed performance when he latched onto Jamie Shackleton's long clearance to score his second of the afternoon.
Jack's House 1
Waggon Athletic 4
Rochdale Alliance League
TWO sloppy first half goals were to prove costly as House played reasonably well against the side just below them in the table.
A penalty pushed the visitors further ahead before Jonathon Taylor pulled a goal back.
Half-time substitutes Jake Goldie and Marc Walters gave House far more menace after the interval and Jamie Bull was unlucky to be denied by a fine save from the goalkeeper.
Todmorden Veterans 2
AFC Royton 3
Rochdale Alliance Division 2
VETS' game against the promotion chasing Oldham side produced a litany of bad luck in front of goal.
Todmorden seemed to be controlling affairs with the visitors unable to even get a shot on target in a goal-less first half.
It continued in much the same vein after the restart only for Royton to take the lead in freaky circumstances as a corner was headed powerfully clear only for the ball to hit the back of a Todmorden head and rebound into their net.
A handball so blatant that it would have made Thierry Henry blush set up a second and Royton amazingly found themselves 3-0 up when a divot deflected a weak shot, which the goalkeeper had covered all the way, into the back of the Todmorden net.
In fairness Vets kept pushing and pulled a goal back through Andy Whitham.
Then, two minutes from time, a deep cross from Pete Holmes was fired home by Danny Birch but it was too late to rescue even a point.
Blue Ball 4
Wellington 3
Rochdale Sunday League
WELLINGTON have not come closer to opening their account for the season than in this game which underlined the progress they have made over the past couple of seasons.
They pressured the Blue Ball defence in the opening minutes but were once again caught on the counter and some sloppy defending was to blame for Ball's first goal.
The second was a penalty which was debatable and the home side found themselves 3-0 ahead when Wellington goalkeeper Ben Bamford was caught in no man's land.
Bamford was to redeem himself later in the day when he made a fantastic save.
It was 3-0 at the break but the introduction of Jordan Walker and Steven Wells at half-time proved a masterstroke.
Walker made an immediate impact scoring with his second touch from a Tommy Uttley cross but Wellington were once again caught on the counter attack as Ball grabbed a fourth goal.
Still they did not let their heads drop and Stevie Uttley and Tommy Uttley linked well to set up Walker's second goal.
Joe Connor then gained possession with a fine tackle and beat two defenders before pushing a fine ball into the path of Walker to complete his hat-trick.
Lee Sutcliffe had a fine game in the defence on debut.
