ONCE upon a time, up in the hills above the wilds of Todmorden, lived a lady golfer called Hans Kathryn Anderton.
Now to this day this lady doesn’t know how but she won a very big medal although it appeared to her in the guise of a glass. And would you believe that all this fortune came to her from hitting a ball down a hole with a stick.
Yes, you could quite
easily be mistaken and think you’re reading a rather zany and obscure fairy story as remarkably yours truly shot a net 67 in this week’s medal competition and became the second Helen Gray qualifier for the season. Yippee.
I should now add, more demurely, that I am really enjoying this moment as I fear those golfing gods are watching and will surely kick me in the shins next week. The only downside is they have actually knocked two shots off my official club handicap.
Would you believe in second place was the lady who actually knocked those two shots off my handicap, the ladies handicap secretary Janet Topham, with a net 74.
In third place, having recently returned from warmer climes, was past lady captain Edna Snook with a net 75.
l Eighty-nine competitors took part in Saturday’s gentleman’s stroke play medal competition in rather difficult breezy conditions. Seasonal treatment work was in progress on the greens contributing to a standard scratch of 71.
The winner of the medal competition was Michael Barnes with a wonderful net score of 65. As a result of this excellent round Michael's handicap was reduced from 16 to 14.
Winning this medal competition gives Mark automatic qualification for the gold medal competition – where 12 qualifiers take part in a strokeplay competition to find the ultimate gold medal winner.
The qualifying Tiger this week for the gold medal competition was Andrew Barker with a net 68.
In second place in this week’s medal competition was young Ben Whitham, son of this year’s Club Captain Neil Whitham, with a net 66. As a result, Ben’s handicap was also reduced from 24 to 22.
It would appear the gentlemens’ handicap secretary has been kept busy as Rod Hunt reduced from 10 to 9, Paul Lukaszyk from 13 to 12 and Ray Newell from 16 to 14 as a result of their below par rounds. The two’s of the day were attained by Shaun Godfrey, John Lukaszyk, Terry Makin, Mick Redmond and David Stafford.
l Todmorden Golf Club’s representatives in the seniors home match, in the Lawrence Batley League, were seniors captain Roger Wornell, and his partner, last years club captain alan Dickinson. Keith Waring and partner Mike Sunderland, Mike Pickles and partner Colin Greenwood, John Lukaszyk and partner Graham Scholes. Nearly all matches went to the wire, but, unfortunately, the home team suffered a rare defeat.
Still, there's always next week!
lTrevor Hopson won the Rabbits donated prize competition, in Sunday morning’s wet conditions. Hopson attained 38 points in the stableford competition. After a card play off, Mike Harper came second, with 33 points. In third place was Pete Borders.
