THESE are interesting times for Mark Clayton.
Seven days after his superb innings steered Todmorden into the Worsley Cup Final he was back in the spotlight as he became the 1,000th Lancashire League victim of David Ormerod.
In a cup final rehearsal at Centre Vale, Accrington took the spoils wit
h a 28 run victory that pushed them to the top of the table,
Todmorden's acting first team captain Andrew Sutcliffe won the toss as asked the visitors to take first use of a wicket which was understandably slow given the recent wet weather.
His actions were rewarded when Accrington opener Paul Carroll found the hands of Mo Bux off the bowling of Jon Campbell with the score on eight.
Stuart Crabtree made his intentions clear as he hit Bux out of the ground but then pushed a return catch to Campbell with the score on 24.
Clayton took a pressure catch to account for professional Roy Silva and then Danny Brown moved smartly to get under a skier from Graham Lloyd.
After 12 overs Accrington were 54 for 4 - all but 12 of those runs having come in boundaries.
Matt Wilson top scored with 23 while Bux, 3 for 30, and Morgan, 4 for 30, reduced Accrington to 112 for 9. A last wicket stand of 30 between Ormerod, 16no, and Damian Clarke, 15, was annoying for the home side.
Accrington skipper Ormerod then removed Todmorden openers Stuart Priestley and Ben Sutcliffe to take his lifetime tally to 999, Silva then adding the vital scalp of his opposite number Goolam Bodi for three.
Silva also removed Andrew Sutcliffe to reduce Todmorden to 26 for 4.
Brown, 16, and Clayton took the score to 65 before the wicketkeeper was trapped in front and then Clayton chipped Ormerod to Bulcock at cover for his 1,000th wicket.
Bulcock removed Whitehead and teenage debutant James Peavoy and Ormerod began his second thousand with the scalp of Bux as Todmorden were on the ropes at 77 for 9.
Campbell and Morgan defied the Accrington attack to make the best stand of the match, adding 37 to deny the visitors the bonus points, both batsmen finishing unbeaten on 18.
Clayton presented Ormerod with a bottle of champagne to mark his stunning achievement but the 41-year-old was probably tempted to try something a little less bubbly 24 hours later after watching his side waste career-best figures by Priestley (pictured)and another fine half century from Bodi as they lost by 15 runs to East Lancs at Centre Vale.
Priestley's 7 for 60 haul had reduced the visitors to 82 for 9 only for a last wicket stand of 72 between David Turner and Sid Patel, 25, to take the game away from them.
Turner hit four sixes and three fours in his career-best 42 not out as East Lancs reached an unlikely 154 all out.
Oliver Wood had bowled a tidy spell with the new ball, claiming 2 for 19 from eight overs, to set up a marathon 16.4 over bowling stint by Priestley.
Sub-professional Jonathon Fielding removed the Sutcliffe brothers cheaply but while there was Bodi there was hope.
Sadly only Priestley joined him in double figures, scoring 25, but while he remained there was an outside change.
The South African eased past 50 and hit ten boundaries and two sixes in his 118-ball stay.
Unfortunately with the overs running out he had to up the scoring rate and when he chipped Patel into the hands of Steve Whalley to become ninth man out with the score on 133, it was all over. Sub professional Jonathan Fielding picked up 5-45 and Patel took 3-64 from 20 overs.
Todmorden and Accrington do battle again on Saturday - this time at Thorneyholme Lane - and Nelson are the visitors to Centre Vale on Sunday.
