Angling: Newcomers get special treatment

FIFTY potential anglers of all ages took up the opportunity to get some free coaching and an introduction to the sport at Todmorden Angling Society's Taster Day last Sunday.

This second Taster Day of the year was held at the Ramsden Wood Fishery waters, which have recently been restocked for the society by developers Bovis Homes NW.

It has been stocked heavily with carp and tench and with five trained coaches on hand to offer free tuition to all who turned up the chance of catches was very good and so it turned out - all of the 50 who tried their hand at the sport caught some fish.

There was no charge for this event, with bait, tackle and licences all provided by the society.

Society secretary Ray Barber extended its thanks to all who organised the event, especially the Griffiths family and the other coaches. "We hope the attendees become hooked on fishing," said Ray.

Thirteen members fished the Tuesday match on Townhouse and there wasn't much in it, with Mick Clegg's catch, which included carp caught on pellet and waggler just edging it for him from second placed John Mellor, who also caught carp using pole and meat, by a few ounces. Tom Brownville, who landed silver fish using pole and caster, was third.

Result: 1, M. Clegg, 18lb 10oz; 2, J. Mellor, 18lb 6oz; 3, 16lb 8oz.

Bank Holiday Monday will see the Tuesday match series grand final being held at Croft, with the draw being made up to 1.45pm and fishing from 2.30pm to 7.30pm. Croft will be closed to pleasure anglers on that day.

Townhouse was also the venue for the recent trophy match. Fifteen fished and Paul Wilkinson was a clear winner using a pole and caster combination to catch silver fish.

Rob McEndry, landing carp using pellet and feeder, was second with Tom Barlow (carp using meat and pole) third and John Mellor fourth.

The fish of the day was a chub of 2lb 4oz caught by Paul Wilkinson, completing a good day for the winner. Also in this match an angler made a catch of a grass carp of 2lb 4oz.

The society is holding an open match this Saturday, August 29, on the Rochdale Canal's Summit section. Ring 077699 05319 to book on.
