Borough edge it in cup final test for town’s juniors

BELLHOLME football ground was proud to host the final between two local rival Todmorden teams.

It was Tod Borough who were jubilant. Both teams had a full compliment of players to choose from and the coaches all used their resources to maximum effect.

The opening minutes saw both teams playing end to end football with no real signs of nerves.

Borough had plenty of the play in the first half with very solid defending from Shaw in goal, and strong tackles from Jacques and Rushworth.

Nicholson, in goal for TSC, made some good saves, particularly in the second half.

Kelly for TSCwas deservedly awarded Man of the Match for TSC. Brackstone was also in fantastic form and not far behind Kelly in his defensive prowess.

A very evenly matched first half was much more exciting than the goalless score line suggested and there were chances for both sides.

Changes to Borough saw Tyler and Duxbury coming on as substitutes for Rushworth and Issitt.

The second half proved equally as exciting and opened with a surge of opportunities for Borough – a Pilling long shot forcing the keeper to push the ball over the crossbar.

They forced a succession of corners but sterling defending by TSC kept them all out.

TSC seemed to have ridden out the storm and were appearing to come back into the game again when Borough grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal following a sensational Hudson run from wide right on the half way line.

He tackled, dribbled the ball and seemed to have lost it when it ran to the right corner flag. But ‘never say die’ running kept it in for him to beat the defender and cross to Duxbury who side footed the ball home for a 1 - 0 Borough lead.

A tense last eight minutes saw further chances at both ends, including one goal-line clearance by Tyler which secured the victory for Borough Blacks after a great team performance throughout.

TSC were unable to force the equaliser that would have taken the game into extra time, which meant that Borough ran out this year’s jubilant cup winners.

The refereeing was top quality and overall this was a very exciting and entertaining cup final played in great spirit and determination.
