Burnley plan friendly to help Accy plight
Burnley Football Club hopes to lend its support to Accrington Stanley's fight for survival by staging a fund-raising friendly against the League Two side at Turf Moor next Tuesday night.
Accrington face the threat of closure if they fail to pay a tax bill of 308,000 within an eight-week deadline imposed by HM Revenue and Customs.
Clarets manager Owen Coyle reacted to Stanley's plight by proposing the friendly game with gate receipts going to Accrington's fighting fund.
Burnley hope to host the fixture on Tuesday, September 8, although the game can not be confirmed until the permission has been granted from the Premier League and all-match day safety procedures are put in place.
Burnley's staff are doing everything possible to allow the match to be staged with chairman Barry Kilby pledging his support to Accrington's battle to stay in business.
Kilby said: "We will always help our friends down the road. We have always had good relations with Accrington and we know how difficult it can be for smaller clubs in the respective leagues.
"I have sympathy for them, knowing how crowded it is for clubs in East Lancashire. We will do anything we can to help them secure their future."
The proposed game would come as a major shot in the arm for Accrington's survival hopes following the launch of their Save Stanley Campaign on Friday.
And it would also give Coyle the chance to give some match practice to some of his first-team squad who are yet to figure regularly this season.
If the game goes ahead there will be no tickets sold in advance with supporters paying on the gate.
