Delighted with Jay Rod’s brace

Two goal Jay Rodriguez

Two goal Jay Rodriguez

WITH a blank weekend all eyes were on Tuesday night’s trip to a struggling Nottingham Forest.

It was the sort of fixture which a team gunning for a play-off place ought to take points from and also the sort of game that Burnley have often, frustratingly, not come away with the goods.

But this wasn’t the case on Tuesday night as a Jay Rodriguez header in each half kept the Clarets up with the pace and only two points off the top six.

Interestingly, in the light of West Ham’s hammering at Ipswich, and Southampton being held by Cardiff, maybe even the top two places aren’t totally out of reach yet for any of the chasing pack.

This might turn out to be one of the most exciting second halves of a Championship season yet.

It was great to see Jay Rod among the goals again, and with the transfer deadline gone and him on the pitch, he’s hopefully secured for the rest of the season. There were rumours, even the BBC reporting a certain struggling Premiership club at the Reebok coming in...

Burnley themselves have made another pre-deadline signing, adding left-back Danny Lafferty to the squad from League of Ireland side Derry City, subject to international clearance.

It looks like the 22-year-old, previously at Celtic, has been signed for the future rather than immediate action, according to Eddie Howe.

“He’s a player we have known about for a while. We had a look at him for a week in training and he impressed us. It’s the closed-season in Ireland so he’s a bit behind in fitness work so we have a bit of work to do to get him right up to speed and it is a big jump for him from the level that he’s played at.

“But he’s had a good grounding at Celtic. You can see he’s had a good education. He’s got a lovely left foot and he loves to get forward.

“He’s a really good footballer and he fits very much into our philosophy. He’s one for the future but is also in our thoughts for now.”

There is another temporary outgoing too, with reserve team forward Alex MacDonald clinching a loan move to Plymouth Argyle. It should give him a welcome chance of first-team football. It is a third loan move following earlier spells with Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
