John Greenwood’s Clarets Corner: Too thin a claret back line for me

NORWICH proved much too tough a nut to crack in the FA Cup third round last Saturday.

They were a handful in the championship last season and they have look the best of the three promoted sides.

If their 4-1 demolition of a reasonably performing Burnley side if anthing to by, they may avoid the drop.

So it’s time for the old chestnut: Burnley can now concentrate on the league, and will need to begin again in high gear at pace-setting Middlesbrough, who might just be the best performing side who have visited Turf Moor yet this season.

Eddie Howe, having already got Kieran Trippier in the bag, is near a deal to make Ben Mee a permanent Burnley player but otherwise there are no incomings to sniff at yet, with a number of loan deals outwards for reserve players and a final departure for Leon Cort.

On Tuesday he said: “We’re looking at players but I don’t think we are close on any others. But we are looking and if the right deal comes along we will make a go for it. We’ve known the areas of the squad we want to improve, we’ve known that for a long time, it’s just about finding the right players at the right price.”

Which is as good a way as any as keeping any cards close to your chest.

I fear Burnley are still thinly spread defensively - basically the starting back four against Norwich plus Trippier and, when fit again, Michael Duff completing the first class players available.

I’d feel better with a bit more defensive strength in depth, it worries me more than any other department.

l AS readers will have already seen on this week’s back page story, the name of a Todmorden company will be on the front of Burnley’s shirts from the summer.

On-line kitchen specialists Premier Range have long supported the club, of course, and just a couple of years ago brought up-and-coming striker Jay Rodriguez and mascot Bertie Bee to Todmorden Show.
