Athletic inflict first league defeat of season on derby rivals Thundercats

Todmorden Athletic under eights beat their Todmorden Thundercats rivals 4-0 in a keenly fought derby.

Athletic were continuing their winning streak while Thundercats were suffering a first league defeat of the season.

Athletic’s success was partly thanks to some excellent first half goal-keeping and then a battling second half midfield display from Euan Logue.

Logue, Dan Adams, Freddie Priestley and Bailey Sutton got the goals.

Two of the best teams in the under eights league cancelled each other out for most of the game Athletic closing down Thundercats from the kick off to keep their chances to a minimum.

Will Hammond, Frank Cooper and Brett Hopley might all have had well-earned goals had it not been for a supreme ‘keeping display from Aidan Bourne.

- A brace of goals from Yannick Machado le Gal helped Todmorden Sports Centre Under 16s secure a 3-2 victory in blustery conditions at Bacup.

Playing against the wind in the first half, Todn were under great pressure from Rossendale United and conceded a goal from a crisply hit shot.

The visitors battled well and le Gal brushed off several challenges before blasting home an equaliser.

The midfield trio of Alec Hodkinson, Christopher Reeder and Josh Petersen were kept busy, although it was virtually impossible to play passing football in such a strong wind.

A well-taken corner by Jack Crummett was met by the ever-consistent Joe Whatmough who headed it strongly past the keeper.

Thomas Stansfield made a string of fine saves before le Gal slotted home well. Rossendale pulled one back but Todmorden held out.
