Todmorden Borough round off their away campaign with a lengthy trip to Furness Cavaliers in Division Two of the West Lancashire League on Saturday.

Borough will be looking to step up on last weekend’s 2-0 defeat away to Milnthorpe Corinthians but much will depend on availability against in-form opponents.

John Gilford was without his son Elliott, Stevie Barker, Dean Farry, Danny Welsh, Dave Patrick and Lee Earnshaw last week and took the opportunity to blood youngsters Joe Gale and 16-year-old Jordan Mitchell.

Tod got a phone call at 11.30am on Saturday to say Milnthorpe’s pitch was unfit but a local 3G surface was available if Borough were prepared to switch.

With Tod in mid-table and the players ready to go, Gilford agreed but the surface probably favoured the hosts, who pass very well while Borough favour a more physical approach.

Third-placed Milnthorpe dominated the early stages and although Tod withstood the pressure well, the home side struck through Richie Sandham with Gilford believing he was offside.

Borough conceded a second when a cross hit Chris Kay and fell favourably for Ryan Close, who made it 2-0 after half an hour.

Gilford was not too disappointed at the interval, when Mitchell came on for Gale (ankle injury) and Jamie Melvin went up front.

Tod, with Harry Whitehead and Kay outstanding at the back, matched their hosts in the second half and had the edge in the last 20 minutes.

Melvin hit a post and had that gone in, Gilford thought things might have been different.

This Saturday’s test looks similarly tricky. Furness won 1-0 in Todmorden on Saturday, August 31 and they have a good home record.

The sixth-placed side face a busy end to the season but won on Tuesday with the only goal of the game from Jordan Hughes at Ulverston Rangers.
