Walsden C and FC are closing in on a first piece of silverware in only their second season of action.

Dan Howley’s men, runners-up in the Rochdale Online Alliance, are through to the final of the league’s Chairman’s Cup.

They will play champions Fothergill and Whittles or Sudden - who meet on Saturday - at Rochdale Town’s ground on Friday, May 15.

Walsden won through with a 2-1 win over Rochdale Asia last weekend.

Howley said Walsden had been the better side but had needed a Danny Brown goal with five minutes left to give them victory at Firgrove.

They had trailed to a penalty after five minutes, following Cameron Hanson’s pull on a rival, but had bombarded their opponents after that.

Joe Gale had missed a couple of good chances before Brown had headed Walsden on terms after half an hour.

Josh Gale had hit a post before Brown finally booked Walsden a final place from Harry Whitehead’s cross.

Howley said it was a “massive achievement” for the club to reach a final so early in its existence.

He said the arrivals of Hanson, Danny Welsh and Whitehead from Todmorden Borough had strengthened the spine of the team.

Walsden are also through to the quarter finals of the President’s Cup and a meeting with Fothergill and Whittles on Saturday, May 9.

Walsden completed their league programme eight days ago with a 5-3 home victory over Falcon.

They trailed 1-0 and 3-2 before coming through to win, Paul Marrow, Welsh, Jonny Sutcliffe and Brown (two) getting their goals.

Victory took their tally to 30 points from 15 games and they expect to receive another three from Balderstone’s no-show.
