A 14-year-old Todmorden boy has fought his way through to the finals of a major boxing competition.

Frank Wilson, above, who boxes for the Halifax Police Boxing Club, won through the Royal Navy Schoolboys’ Championship to the Yorkshire finals on Saturday, where he will be fighting Sonny Boye Price of Steel City ABC, Sheffield.

To win through to the final he had to beat John Gaskin, of Doncaster. Club coach Mick Rowe said: “Frank has been training hard for this competition, putting a lot of time in at the gym.

“The first round Frank fought hard, but found Gaskin’s southpaw stance difficult to deal with.

“We had a strong chat in the corner following the first round”, said the Halifax coach.

“Frank then went up a gear in the second and third rounds with Gaskin visibly struggling with the pace.”
