George win it against the odds

Highfield 1 Royal George 2 (Rochdale Sunday League)

George were up against the odds in this cup encounter with Highfield drafting in some of the second and first team players.

George held solid until the 45th minute when they were caught on the counter-attack.

But they came out fighting in the second half and Joe Connor popped up to meet a Gaz Lawrence corner and head home the equaliser and make it five goals in five games for the right back.

Lawrence then put in a ball which was met by Kev Sutcliffe, who poked it home. The back four of Ford, Higgins, Connor and Carrington were outstanding in the second half and James Starozczuk was solid in the midifeld while Fisher, Fowler and Rooks caused more problems up front.

Sportsmans 4-0 Royal George (Rochdale Sunday League)

Before the start there was a minute’s silence for Sam Connor.

George had many key players missing and could not play their passing game on a heavy, muddy pitch.

Joe Connor beat four men before his shot bounced off the post. It was the only real chance for George apart from when Tommy Uttley failed to connect with an Adam Gray cross. Jamie Donellan pulled of a string of fine saves to keep the scoreline down.
