Golfers brave the elements

WOMEN members of Todmorden Golf Club played the centenary competition, in cold windy conditions.

The presentation and meal was held in the clubhouse in the dark, with a few candles, as the Cross Stone area was without electricity for most of the night.

The winner with 36 points was Ann Dewhurst, with Lady captain, Janet Tayor second with 33 points and in joint third were Michele Miller and Alison Barker, with 32 points. Alison was the only player to get a birdie.

Conditions for the men’s competition were more like playing in the winter league than summer.

Stuart Jackson won with 40 points, Warren Nicholson was second and Michael Hartley third .

On Sunday Ian Tootell had a hole in one on the fifth hole. It was the second made over the last few weeks. David Walker holed his tee shot on the 16th in mid-week play.

l WOMEN at Hebden Bridge Golf Club also played a team competition in a Ryder Cup format with one team led by Lady captain Frances Tighe and the other by vice-captain Linda Powell.

The outcome was eventually decided in ‘penalty shoot-out’ style between the team captains over nine holes on the putting green.

Linda claimed the honours on the eighth hole.

Pat Coukham, Joan Scott and Dianne Croft represented Linda in her team.

She drew her match with Margaret Sunderland, with Pat edging out Lorraine Boulton, Frances beating last year’s Lady captain Joan and Dianne sharing the spoils with Jan Cox.
