Bowls: American format suits Tod's two Johns
AN EXCITING conclusion rewarded tspectators who stayed to see the final of Old Town Bowling Club's American Pairs competition on Sunday.
In improving conditions the competition brought together 20 pairs to compete in a contest sponsored by ABV Licensed Wholesale Trade.
The quarterfinal games were keenly fought setting up semi-finals between homesters Don Coneron and Don Cooper who took on Hebden Bridge's pairing of Gary Timewell and Christine Brennand.
The two Dons come from behind to establish a 9-5 lead which provided a springboard to their eventual 15-9 success.
The other semi-final between Todmorden Park's John Hartley and John Simpson and Mytholmroyd WMC's Peter Copley and Neil Conn was a hard fought affair with the advantage changing hands five times before the two Johns inched their way to a 15-13 victory after 16 ends.
This set the stage for a final between Old Town and Tod Park.
The Park men soon established a four point lead but the Old Towners fought back and bowling short straight marks and scoring only singles gradually established a 9-7 lead by the13th end.
A perfect second wood by "Simmy" took the jack at the 14th end and "Harters" immediately lengthened the mark to full corners. This saw them establish a margin of 14-9 needing only one more point for victory.
Don Coneron bowled a peach of a second wood at the 16th end to retake the jack. The homesters then brought the scores level at 14-14 at the 20th end.
Don Cooper set a straight short mark again but a loose lead left too much room for the Park men who scored the one point to lift the silver trophy and the 100 first prize.
All four finalists were applauded from the green by an appreciative crowd.
