Bowls: Close thing in triple title

Twenty teams representing clubs from as far afield as Otley and Bradshaw made the most of a dry day on Sunday as Old Town Bowling Club staged its annual Centenary Triples Competition.

The round robin stage saw strong performances from Whinswood, Old Town, Luddenden Foot, Crossroads, Todmorden Park, Bradshaw, Savile and Ackroyden Victoria all battling through to the knockout stages.

There were also surprising exits for Paul Fisher's Luddenden Foot team and Chris Lodge's team from Wharfmeadows in Otley, both finalists in recent years.

In the semi-finals the last four triples, from Whinswood, Tod Park, Savile and Acky Vics split into pairs and singles.

This brought an impressive individual performance from Whinswood's Sue Finnie. whose accuracy left little room for her opponent Shawn Frewin from Tod Park and she ran out a 21-8 winner.

Savile's Richard Helliwell again used his mastery of the long game to earn a comfortable victory over Ackroyden's talented young player Tom Casson by 21-13.

These two performances secured their teams a place in the final.

The final was a tense affair with Savile's Helliwell powering his way to a 15-3 lead over Sue Finnie in only 12 ends. His accuracy on long marks was the deciding factor.

The title now looked to be heading in Savile's direction. However while Helliwell was steaming ahead, his team-mates in the pairs, John Booth and Ray Wolsey were having a hard time against the Whinswood pairing of Peter Finnie and Jenny Taylor and soon found themselves 13-0 down after seven ends against a pairing who had both bowled with consistency throughout the day.

Sue Finnie's determination saw her reduce the lead to 16-10.

In the pairs Booth and Wolsey tried to fight back but went down 15-2, a bitter disappointment for the Savile men.

That 13-point lead was enough to seal victory for the Whinswood team although Sue Finnie gamely continued her comeback to score another five points before Richard Helliwell won their match 21-15.

Club secretary Derek Williamson congratulated the Whinswood team, presented the trophy and prizes and thanked sponsors Lloyds TSB and the tireless team of volunteers at Old Town who had helped to make it a successful day.
