Brave Borough lose out in hard-fought final
Borough went into East Lancashire Football Alliance U18 Cup Final against AFC Darwen at Darwen’s Anchor Ground as underdogs with the home side finishing runners-up in the top division.
But Boro dominated the first 30 mins with captain Crowther setting the example for his team.
Boro were more creative and ensured Darwen were kept on the back-foot.
Boro’s backline of Antemes, Harper, Jackson and Hanson were solid and restricted Darwen to few chances.
The full backs were protected by Uttley and Davy-Day, who both worked hard while providing width and counter attacking options.
Boro’s goal came from a period of first half pressure following a corner when Bob Uttley received the ball on the edge of the penalty area.
He weaved his way past the defence and despite being fouled in the process powered a low shot past the keeper.
The lead was deserved and Darwen were struggling to keep Boro from going further ahead.
But Darwen then enjoyed the better of the final 10 minutes and created a few openings and were only kept at bay with a top quality save by keeper Gale as he managed to turn a low shot past the post.
The first half ended with Boro’s midfield pairing of Highley and Ormerod working hard to deny Darwen.
As the second half began Boro needed to defend in numbers.
Eventually the pressure told and on 55 minutes Darwen equalised with a rebounded effort headed home.
They pushed harder and soon took the lead.
A lack of concentration by Boro allowed the ball into the net direct from a corner kick.
Boro sought the equaliser, but a few opportunities came and went.
Boro used their substitutes as the effort began to exhaust some players. Mirza and Antemes were replaced by Law and Travis then Read replaced Davy-Day.
While the equaliser did not come Boro should be proud of their efforts and their performance brought praise from league officials.
It was difficult to choose a man of the match but it went to centre half Cameron Hanson.
