Chess: Huett leads the revival

THE revived Todmorden Chess Club is performing well in its first season back in the Calderdale League and currently top Division 2.

The latest fixture saw victory over a Courier B team weakened by players being unavailable - in fact Courier could not field a full team and had to default one of the boards.

The final score was a 4- victory to Todmorden, Mike Huett's win against Chris Strafford being the highlight of the evening.

Huett played in his normal aggressive style and, with a combination of good attacking moves, soon had his opponent in a hopeless position.

Many players are performing very well with P J Ellis winning all his three matches this season and Scott Gornall in second place in the division's leading scores.

Although the team is performing well the club is always looking for anyone who can play chess or those who want to learn to play to swell its membership especially as it is planning to enter a second team next season.

Players can visit the club, which plays every Monday night at the Todmorden Working Men's Club on Halifax Road.

Todmorden v Courier B: C Edwards , P Hughes ; P Edwards beat T Joemagi; M Huett beat C Strafford; S Gornall beat R Bottomley; D Milton won by default.
