Cricket: Newbitt runs tally moves past 400
SIMON Newbitt raced past 400 runs for the season as Todmorden consolidated their lofty league position with a 118-run victory over basement club Rawtenstall at Centre Vale on Sunday.
As always the Todmorden opener looked to score at a good pace, hitting ten fours and a six in a typically entertaining knock before falling, again typically, in the sixties.
This time he had 66 to his name, having clocked up his fourth half century of the summer.
It was the dominant innings in a total of 188, grafted over 49.2 overs.
Stevie Barker, 28, hit valuable late runs as visiting professional Andy Payne, 3 for 48, and Toby Bulcock, 3 for 42, shared the wickets among them.
Home professional Chintha Jayasinghe had fallen for a duck and seemed determined to make Rawtenstall pay for the ignomy heaped upon him.
He took the new ball and ripped through the top of the Rawtenstall order reducing them to 24 for 7 – Stevie Barker playing his part with 3 for 23.
Fortunately for the visitors the eighth wicket pairing of Andy Riley and Scott Wylie put on 40 runs.
James Morgan broke their partnership and went on to claim 2 for 15 from 5.3 overs.
However, Jayasinghe took the honours as his 15 over included five maidens and produced excellent figures of 5 for 27 - Rawtenstall eventually bowled out for 70 in the 26th over.
