Cricket: David's in top gear as Tod win at Enfield

AN unbeaten 58 by David Wiese guided Todmorden to a seven wicket win at Enfield with 14 and a half overs left.

The South African professional looked to be hitting top gear as he hit eight fours and two sixes in his 53 ball innings.

Wiese hit an unbeaten 58 as the Centre Vale Park side reached a target of 167.

Andrew Sutcliffe hit five fours and two sixes in making an unbeaten 36, adding an unbroken 102 for the fourth wicket with Wiese.

Sutcliffe hit successive wristily flicked boundaries off Alex Blake and two balls later he clubbed the left armer over square leg for six as the pair accelerated to victory.

Skipper Simon Newbitt hit 37 and Ben Sutcliffe 14 for the visitors.

Earlier, Wiese had taken four for 43 in a miserly 22.3 overs spell as Enfield collapsed from 143 for four to 166 all out.

Professional Adam Bracewell top scored with 39, his highest score of the season, hitting five fours and a six before becoming one of wicketkeeper Danny Brown's five victims.

Mas Ahmed also made his highest score of 2010 before being caught behind by Brown off Andrew Sutcliffe's first ball, after making 34.

Chris Maudsley was unbeaten on 22, Aneeq Hassan made a brisk 20 and Liam Jackson 16. Wiese picked up 4-43 and there were three run outs in the Enfield innings.

As well as Brown's five victims, there were three run outs.

Skipper Newbitt said: "It was good to see Danny Brown gets five victims although it now seems likely he will miss a few games due to a broken toe."

Todmorden were bouncing back from a home defeat at the hands of Nelson in the Twenty/20 competition on Friday.

Hopes of a home victory were high when Newbitt (81) and Ben Sutcliffe (23) put on 107 for the first wicket and Alastair Harrison (29 not out) and Wiese (17) lifted the total to 188 for three.

However, Nelson got off to a cracking start with Stuart Lemon (60) and professional Burton de Wett (78) putting on 132. Neil Thompson then steered Nelson to an eight wicket win with an unbeaten 30.

"It was very disappointing especially after batting so well as a team and getting what seemed a very challenging score of 188," said Newbitt.

"But we did not bowl or field as well as we could and to be honest they got them easy."

It will be a big double home weekend against Bacup in the cup on Saturday.

Then for Colne visit in the league and a chance to take maximum points again to get back into a mid table pack that has developed

Todmorden seconds made it a double against Enfield, winning by four wickets thanks to an excellent bowling performance by Ilyas Hussain who took five wickets for 38 runs to keep the visitors to a total of 171.

Todmorden overhauled them scoring 174 for six with Chris Ross top scoring with 48.

The thirds could not match it despite a good performance from such a young side.

Church got off to a good start until 14-year-old George Hatton's leg spin tied them down. He finished with four for 27.

Todmorden started well and then collapsed to 51 for six.

Then it was a rescue act from 12-year-old Bilal Abbas and 14-year-old Issac Davy-Day.

The latter was out for 21, but Abbas went on to register a fine 42, but their efforts were just not enough to take the game.
