Cricket: From runs feast to two days of famine

WALSDEN scored less in two innings than two of their batsmen hit in one match the week before.

From a history making game with centuries for Duminda Perera and James Rawlinson, they crashed to an innings of 84 on Saturday and fared even worse the day after being bowled out for 83.

The only highlight for Walsden from the two games was Perera's bowling.

The Sri Lankan took five for 65 on Saturday at home to Ashton and then three for 34 in the derby game at Littleborough.

But it was a tale of woe on both days with the bat for Walsden .

At Scott Street they kept Ashton to a manageable target of 192 for nine, mainly thanks to Perera's five-wicket haul.

But with openers Elliott Gilford and James Rawlinson both out for ducks in reply it never looked like a reachable target.

The next three batsmen all tried to steady things, but once they had gone cheaply, the tail failed to wag and the home side were all out for a poor 84 in less than 34 overs. And the following day, it was almost a repeat performance.

Walsden restricted Littleborough to 205 for six, with again Perera being the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

But it was a story of another batting collapse as the visitors were unable to live with the home bowlers.

Only Ashley Sbizzirri was able to make a sizeable score with a knock of 30 as Walsden crumbled to 83 all out.

The seconds won away at Ashton on Saturday by 81 runs.

All Walsden's batsmen contributed with Gareth Connor top scoring with 52.

But then Martin Halstead took the home side apart, getting all the first six batsmen and finishing with six for 36.

But the team struggled next day at home to Littleborough.

The visitors notched up an impressive 268 for four.

In reply Walsden could only manage 196 all out with the Gale brothers Joe and Josh top scoring with 45 and 41 respectively
