Cricket: No old pals act as Bren puts Tod to the sword

BRENDAN Nash renewed his love affair with Centre Vale as Todmorden and East Lancs clashed twice in as many days in the Lancashire League.

In 1999 Nash - then an Australian state player - spent a season as Todmorden professional and ended the season with 1200 runs, a record for a Centre Vale paid man.

On Sunday Nash - now a West Indies test player - hit a century to send his old team-mates tumbling to a 69 run defeat.

He most definitely has not forgotten where the boundaries are at Todmorden, stroking 16 fours and two sixes in his 115 as East Lancs posted 256 for 7.

Nash dominated stands of 80 with John Turner, 63 with Phil Bolton and then 61 for the fourth wicket with Mark Lomas.

He finally became one of Chintha Jayasinghe's three wickets on his home league debut.

Simon Newbitt and Ben Sutcliffe both fell cheaply in reply but Jayasinghe did enough to suggest he will be a useful all round acquisition as he made 56 from 53 balls.

Support was patchy as, despite 29 from skipper Jon Henderson and an unbeaten 23 from Alistair Harrison, the home side was bowled out for 187 - Sam Sweeney claiming 4 for 41.

Mo settles for a tie

The previous day the sides had played out an exciting tie at Alexandra Meadows.

James Morgan was run out with three balls of the match - reduced to 45 overs a side by rain - to leave the scores level and each side with nine points to their name.

Jayasinghe took 4 for 43 in support of veteran Mo Bux.

Bux claimed 5 for 35 as only Paul Kelly, 33, Abdul Bisoodwall, 30, and Mark Lomas, 23, made much of an impression with the bat in a total of 148 all out.

Batting remained difficult as Todmorden skipper Henderson top scored with 30 in the reply.

Alistair Harrison, 23, Simon Newbitt, 21, Jayasinghe, 16, and Danny Brown, 14, all chipped in but no-one could conjure up a match-winning innings as Nash took 3 for 41 and Kelly 3 for 33.
