Cricket: Stevie's in seventh heaven as Tod aim for third
WITH two games left, Todmorden are on song and looking for a third place finish in the Lancashire Cricket league.
Two wins over the weekend, thanks mainly to a superb bowling didsplay by Stevie Barker have left them firmly in fourth and only four points behind third placed East Lancashire.
Barker took seven wickets on the Saturday and repeated the feat the following day.
Todmorden's last two games are both away from home, but skipper Simon Newbitt is confident.
"It's always a pity playing away as it is so good playing at Centre Vale but we're looking for two wins from those and see where it takes us," he said.
They will have to do it without professional David Wiese who has now left.
Todmorden are eager to see him back next year and await a decision soon.
But they should have no problems if they can produce last weekend's form.
Away from home they defeated Colne with Barker taking a league best seven for 48 as the home side were bowled out for 95.
Mathew Brierley's one handed catch at mid wicket to send back Anwar Ali was the highlight in the field for the visitors.
Skipper Newbitt hit an unbeaten 42, adding 72 with Ben Sutcliffe, who made 35 as Todmorden got home in the 24th over.
Both batsmen passed 500 runs for the season during their innings.
Barker was on the mark again next day with another seven wicket haul, setting another new career best mark, taking seven for 41 in Todmorden's five wicket win over Enfield at Centre Vale to make it 14 wickets for the weekend.
James Morgan also took two for 36 with Asif Fazal top scoring with 42 in the Enfield innings.
Liam Jackson (11) was the only other player in double figures but the total was boosted by 28 extras.
Mas Ahmed took a fine slip catch to remove skipper Simon Newbitt for eight off David Bracewell and then Jackson dismissed professional David Wiese for 1. Nick Barker was unmoved, hitting an unbeaten 41 with good support from Ben Sutcliffe (22), Andrew Sutcliffe (16) and Stevie Barker (12) as Todmorden cruised home.
