Dinner a smash hit with tennis aces

TODMORDEN Tennis Club staged its annual dinner and dance in the town hall.

Despite the poor weather conditions a 100 guests attended and, after changing out of their their wellies and walking boots, enjoyed a five course dinner provided by Lords of Rochdale, while the community brass band played.

Later guests danced the night away to live music from Souled Out and DJ Keith Rudman.

A club spokesman said: “Considering the weather during the week we were very pleased that the event took place and our thanks go to all those who attended. Special thanks also to the Town Council for their continued support of the Club.

All funds raised by the dance will help the club in its efforts to move from its Centre Vale park base and develop facilities which will benefit the community and allow the club to push the Lawn Tennis Association’s “Tennis for All” campaign.

Since 2008 the club has had to play its league games in Halifax after the Calderdale League condemned the state of the courts there.

For many years the club has hired the courts in the park every Sunday morning from October to April and organised league matches for four teams on Tuesdays and Thursday in the summer.

The club's Sunday morning sessions now take place at Calder High School, as do its Spring League home matches.

Discussions took place last year between the club and Calderdale Council about building another court and re-surfacing the three existing courts in Centre Vale.

The club has said it is prepared to sell its land with its courts for housing development in order to jointly finance the project and its future to maintain the quality of the facility.

The Club already supports the 5 to 10-year-old junior red tennis sessions held on Tuesday afternoons at Todmorden Sports Centre as part of the LTA promotion and develop young tennis players for its league teams.
