Football: Boro hit five and it could have been more
Todmorden Borough 5 Askham United 1 West Lancashire League Division Two
A GOOD win but it could have been even better. That sums up Todmorden Borough's result over lowly opposition.
As in all their games this season they dominated the opening exchanges, creating chance after chance, but failing to turn them into goals.
It is something Boro officials are very conscious of and are working hard to overcome.
But they have been given hope for the future by Oliver Wood, who stepped up with a hat trick on Saturday to make it six goals in three games.
"He was certainly the pick of the forwards as far as goals are concerned," said chairman and secretary Kevin Brough.
"It was a good result for us although the opposition were not particularly strong but we'll certainly we'll take it.
"We started the way we have in all the games so far, dominating possession, but failing to take avantage of the chances we have created," he said.
Borough in fact went behind against the run of play when a long ball took a deflection into the home net.
Despite the setback the home men were undeterred and were soon back on level terms thanks to a shot from Marvin Bonny.
He was there again soon after, but this time was brought down in the area and Oliver wood stepped up to put the spot kick away and give Borough a 2 - 1 lead as they took control just before the break.
Despite their superiority they started the second period slowly but eventually got going again as Bonny grabbed his second.
Now in complete control it was no surprise when more goals came as Wood completed his hat trick.
His final goal was the pick of the match as he cut in from the right and slammed a powerful shot into the visitors' goal.
The win enabled Borough to keep in touch with the early front runners in the division.
Next week sees them facing a tough challenge as they travel to Walney island at Barrow in Furness, their furthest away fixture and a round trip of about 200 miles.
"They have had mixed results so far, but we'll be going knowing it will be a tough game, but hoping we will go well," said Brough.
l With players missing while on holiday or playing cricket, it meant that both the first and reserve teams were weakened.
The young inexperienced reserve side in particular, struggled against the much more experienced and physical Mill Hill St Peter's and went down 7 - 1.
They played some good football at times and though were always behind managed to hold the home side until the last quarter when they finally succumbed letting in three further goals.
