Football: Boro rue missed chances

Todmorden Borough 2 Ladybridge 2 West Lancashire Football League

TWO points dropped - that was the verdict on Todmorden Borough's game at home to Ladybridge.

It was a similar story to the way that the club's three previous games had gone.

In an early start to the football league the club had won one game, drawn another and also lost one.

It all added up to points which did not come their way and which chairman and secretary Kevin Brough hopes they will not rue as the season progresses.

As in the other games Todmorden dominated against Ladybridge, creating numerous chances, but being unable to ,ake their pressure count with goals.

They started well and put the visitors under constant pressure for the first 20 minutes without being able to add the killer touch.

They were the first to get the ball in the net, but it was ruled offside.

Soon after, however they got the lead when Oliver Wood's telling header found the net from a Dean Farry corner.

It was Wood's third goal in two matches, having come off the bench last Saturday to score both goals for Borough in a 2 - 0 win over Lancashire Constabulary.

Going in 1 - 0 at half-time, Borough looked comfortable, but a lapse in concentration soon after the restart changed all that as a visiting player was given too much room and his shot found the back of the net to level the scores.

The game became much more even as the visitors improved and started to become a real threat.

The home men were spurred back into action and regained the after a good move, which then Marvin Bonny break free and fire the ball home.

The visitors responded with pressure of their own, but the home side seemed up to it and held them back with solid defence.

But in the dying minutes as it looked all set for a home win, Borough were handed a cruel blow as a defensive mix-up gifted Ladybridge a goal to level the match.

It left Borough stunned and now they have to regroup before another home game on Saturday against Askham United who are pointless in the West Lancashire Football League Division Two after losing all four opening games.

"We have to learn how to capitalise on our pressure and be more clinical in our finishing," said Brough.

Todmorden Borough Reserves who have so far won only one of their opening four games go to Mill Hill St Peter's, who have so far only played two games, winning one and drawing the other.
