Football: Great team performance brings long distance joy

Walney Island 0 Todmorden Borough 4 West Lancashire league BOROUGH put in a complete team performance and came away with a resounding win.

It was the furthest of the club's away trips to the Barrow in Furner area, but it was a happy trip back.

"It was a very good win, given the distance and especially worthwhile in view of the display," said chairman and secretary Kevin Brough.

As in every game so far Borough dominated the early exchanges putting the home side firmly on the back foot.

This time though they were able to turn the pressure to their advantage.

Oliver Wood saw an early chance hit the crossbar, but then he rolled the ball from a free kick 20 yards out to Jamie Scott who drove the ball into the bottom left of the net.

Wood then got his own reward with the goal of the match, turning the defence and putting an unstoppable shot past the keeper from 18 yards.

Starting the second half leading 2 - 0 Borough's defence then held solid as they soaked up pressure from the home side.

But once Marvin Bonny's shot had given them a three-goal lead, the game was won.

Borough now started to relax and played much more controlled football. It was no surprise when they added a fourth, Nathan Adams finishing off a good build-up.

The home men never gave up though and keeper Jamie Shackleton, who had had a quiet afternoon, was suddenly called upon to pull off a fantastic save in the final minutes.

l The second team went down 3 - 2 at home to Whinney Hill.

They had been leading 2 - 0 at half-time but allowed the visitors back into the game. Lack of experience in closing the game out was blamed for the loss.

But Brough said that with more players expected to be available soon it would give the club greater strength in depth and allow the reserves to turn it round.

- On Saturday the first team plays in the first round of the Lancashire Amateur Shield at home to Collegiate Old Boys, from Liverpool (KO 2pm).
