Football: Heartbreak for Wellington as as Highfield pinch the points

Todmorden Wellington 1 Highfield Reserves 2 Rochdale Sunday League

WELLINGTON came within an ace of opening their account for the season.

The home side defended well in the face of strong Highfield pressure but fell behind when a shot was deflected in off Stewart Metcalfe.

Ben Bamford kept Wellington in the game with a string of fine saves and his team-mates began to grow in confidence and press forward,

Jack Wilkinson and Oliver Challis bombarded the Highfield goal while Jack Wilkinson and Joe Connor linked up well to create chances.

Wellington pressed and pressed but still trailed at half time.

However, they maintained their positive approach and were very strong defensively with Johnathon Making, Tommy Uttley, Jacub Boulton and Stewart Metcalfe sticking to their tasks.

Joe Connor took the ball from his own penalty area and linked superbly with Niall Worthington only to see his shot deflected wide.

From the resulting corner Liam Legden equalised direct from the flag.

It was short-lived as the visitors caught them on the counter attack and Wellington ran out of time to get another.
