Football: It's a long way back for Borough

Furness Rovers 2 Todmorden Borough 0 West Lancashire League

TRIPS to Cumbria are always gruelling, never more so when they result in defeat.

So it was on Saturday as Borough played well in spells in a very even contest only to be undone by a corner at the end of each half.

Borough began with five in midfield and Dave Kay as lone striker and they over-ran their hosts in the early stages without really forcing the Rovers goalkeeper into a save.

Rovers slowly adjusted to counteract the tactics and ended the first-half well on top but without forcing goalkeeper Paul Terry into action.

Indeed Alistair Harrison and Danny Skwarek in central defence and debutant right back Joe Hanson were coping well with everything Furness threw at them.

Then, two minutes before half-time, Borough switched off at a corner and Furness scored at the near post to take the lead.

The visitors switched tactics at the break with Oliver Wood pressed forward to give Kay some support and they looked a threat again.

Once again neither goalkeeper was overworked but again, a corner undid Borough as an unfortunate ricochet fell kindly and allowed the Rovers player to slot home goal number two.
