Football: More teams get under way
FOOTBALL starts to dominate in the Calder Valley this weekend.
Todmorden Borough have already played a number of league games, but most other teams in the Calder Valley start their campaigns this weekend.
While Borough have an away fixture in the West Lancashire League in the Barrow in Furness area, most other clubs in the district are at home.
The big game in the Hebden Bridge area sees Hebden Royd Red Star's derby clash with Midgley Utd in the Ziggy's Spice House League Premier Division on Friday.
Red Star finished in fourth last season, well ahead of Midgley, but the game is sure to be a close fought one, though home advantage has usually been a telling factor in previous clashes.
Red Star are feeling confident after a number of new signings including defender Spencer Harris, who was formerly on Huddersfield Town's books.
The other team in the division, Calder 76 have a home game against newly promoted Sowerby.
They are also in a more confident mood after last season's disappointment and feel they now have a stronger and more organised squad.
In Division Three Wadsworth United also have a derby clash with Midgley Utd Reserves.
Games start in Todmorden with the Rochdale and District Sunday League.
Last season Woodhouse gained promotion to Division Two and with a cup win also to their name are looking forward to a strong season, retaining the same players, but adding new signings, making pressure for places.
Todmorden Royal George, formerly Wellington, start their campaign in Division Three with a tricky fixture at Falconers.
After a difficult last season under their old name, the club is looking for a good start having taken on a number of new players.
They too are in confident mood as are Jack's House in the Rochdale Alliance Division One who start away at Whitworth Valley Seconds on September 4.
The club is in buoyant mood after a massive influx of players from several quarters, including from the former Todmorden Veterans' side.
It means it is able to field two sides with the seconds home to Fothergill and Whittle's seconds in Division Three
