Football: Round-up - it's wiin, win, win!
A TRIO of wins made it a red letter day for three Todmorden clubs last weekend.
Todmorden Borough 2
Bolton County 0
West Lancashire League
BOROUGH'S win over the league's bottom club wasn't quite as comprehensive as anticipated but it is still three points in the bag.
The home side dominated possession without extending themselves in what was a pretty dour encounter at times.
They took the lead when Danny Aspinall's speculative 25 yard shot found itself netting in the back of the County net.
Borough continued to press without troubling the visiting goalkeeper too much and boss Paul Harris took the opportunity to give Terry Lowe and Joe Hanson some valuable first team experience after a string of good performances in the second team.
Lowe had already gone close to scoring when, with 75 minutes on the clock, he beat the goalkeeper to the ball and netted Borough's second of the afternoon.
With Alistair Harrison and Danny Skwarek in fine form home goalkeeper Paul Terry had little to do but, when called upon, he did pull off a fine fingertip save to preserve his clean sheet.
Todmorden Boro Vets 3
Donkey Dodgers 2
Rochdale Alliance League
VETERANS set off like a house on fire and raced into a three goal lead after just 25 minutes.
Stuart Bottomley set them on their way with a super ball as he whipped the ball over his shoulder and into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
Jan Barker then released a perfect ball over the top for Andy Whitham to fire into the bottom corner.
The same combination struck again soon after with Whitham chipping the ball home on this occasion.
Dodgers pulled a goal back before half-time and a second soon after the restart but Veterans held on for what was a well deserved victory.
Woodhouse United 3
Red Lion Reserves 0
Dennis John Trophy Q-F
WHILE their priority remains promotion - and the championship title - United are also eyeing the league cup silverware and cruised into the semi-final of the competition on Sunday.
They dominated more or less from the first whistle but it was not until the 60th minute that they managed to make their dominance pay as Stuart Parnell stabbed the ball home from close range after a real scramble in the box.
Joe Whitham turned and volleyed in a stunning second and United underlined their dominance when Matthew Town's free kick was flicked home by Darren Priestley.
Marc Walters in midfield and central defender Chris Halstead were dominant players for the home side.
The teams meet again this Sunday, the game being played at Woodhouse as Lion's first team are also at home that day.
