Golf: Chris's first 'major' win would have pleased Philip
OVER the past two weeks, Todmorden Golf Club has seen the President's Prize contested over difficult conditions and fast greens.
This combined with tricky pin positions meant the winner would have to play two good rounds to be among the prizes.
The first week saw Chris Redmond carve out a slender lead on 38 points, narrowly leading a host of players.
The second week saw Chris card 34 points to set the clubhouse target of 72 points.
This proved difficult with the wind strengthening for the afternoon players. Nick May came closest with a gallant 35, narrowly finishing second to Chris on 71 points.
The best net scores for the first and second weeks respectively were Matthew Saxon and Trevor Barnes.
They all won prizes given by President Philip Brown, who sadly passed away in May of this year. It showed the generosity and organisational skills of Philip, who had been an active member of the club since 1974, that he had already chosen his prizes for the competition.
At Saturday night's presentation, his wife Irena, also a long serving member and past Lady Captain, recounted Philip's early days at the club.
Among her memories were Philip's role in organising members of the club to marshall the 14th hole at Royal Lytham in the Open Championship in the early 90s. All the information and memorabilia had been entered into a file which Irena presented to the club as a memento of Philip's life for other members to enjoy.
She followed her speech with a champagne toast in Philip's memory. This was well received by everyone including the winner Chris Redmond, who incidentally Philip had known since he was a boy.
This was his first "major" win at the club.
The last raffle prize, donated by the stand-in President John Hodson and drawn by the Captain Mike Parenti, was won by Irena,a fitting finale to a great evening.
