Irene takes top title
WE had dinner, we had dancing, we had a raffle, we had stand up bingo, we had a picture quiz, we had "name that tune" and there was a "turn".
Oh yes, all this merriment and frivolity was part of the end of season celebratory Annual Ladies Dinner at Todmorden Golf Club and I think it can be said that a good time was had by all.
On arrival the clubhouse looked simply stunning with beautifully decorated tables and a male line up of eight dashing and chivalrous waiters and barmen notably club captain Neil Whitham, John Whitham, Jack Anderton, Clive Cook, Alan Dickinson, Les Greaves, Mick Parenti and Steve Shone.
Lydia Troy our catering manager and the girls prepared a delicious three-course dinner for forty-six ladies.
This slightly mischievous reporter introduced the first ever Toddies Top Totties Duck Egg Awards last year and these were given to the ladies for any misdemeanours and transgressions throughout the season.
Surprisingly this year I was asked back, but I have to confess I had a slight dilemma as the ladies have been far too well behaved this year. It’s either that or they have been deliberately keeping stuff from me and I suspect the latter!
So I eventually came up with the idea of sharing some of my season's uncut Todmorden News reports and introduced the Mini Queenie Awards because the ladies weren’t badly behaved enough, or eccentric enough for a duck egg award!
Now for a bit of an update, you may remember a few months ago I hinted, very subtly of course, that I was running short of golf balls and merely wondered if Todmorden's “King of the 2’s” captain elect Terry Makin might have some going spare.
Well, as the season progressed I figured Terry must have been too busy writing his speeches in preparation for next year to think about my depleting stock of balls. However, I was wrong and Terry arranged for me to presented with…yes, yes, yes, six new golf balls. Thanks, Terry!
l THE Ladies Golfer of the Year is one of the most highly regarded trophies within the ladies golfing calendar, as it covers most of the competitive individual competitions throughout the playing year.
Consequently this prestigious trophy is awarded to the season's most consistent player.
The points have been added up and I can report that in first place with 28 1/2 points is this season's bookies favourite Irene Muldowney.
Irene has certainly had an outstanding playing season having won this years Captains Prize, Presidents Prize, Helen Gray Trophy and Two Ball Knock-out Championship.
In second place for the second year running was Irena Brown with 20 1/2 points. In third place was last season's golfer of the year Julia White with 18 1/2 points. In joint fourth place with 16 points were Lady Captain Linda Bell and this shell-shocked reporter Kathryn Anderton.
The official presentation will take place next week at the ladies' annual meeting.
l METHINKS our chaps must be slightly barking!
I mean who would want to play golf in those conditions? Would you really want to get up at 7am on a Sunday morning and play golf in the cold and in the rain and on a very wet course?
Well, 26 of our Todmorden Rive-Rockers did, and as one said to me “well, the sun did come out Kath, it might have been only for three minutes, but it did come out.” Like I said - slightly barking but very optimistic!
The winner of the third winter league match of the series was Paul Horsfall with 36 points. Paul was the winner of this season's May Medal Competition earlier in the year and featured as a winner in one of last year's winter league matches with one of the highest scores of the season.
This week's winter league team competition was won by Pete Borders, Bill Simpson and Warren Duckworth with 92 points.
Interestingly Pete was on last week's winning team, Bill was last week's individual winner and Warren was last season's winter league series runner up. Winner of the football card was former club championship holder Dave Arrowsmith.
l The ladies' section of Todmorden Golf Club have expressed their thanks to Kathryn Anderton for her professional entertainment during the evening.
