Motor sport: Full speed ahead for family with racing in its blood

A FATHER and son team from Cornholme will look to race their way to success at the first event of the Formula MiniStox 2010 season on Sunday.

David Gavaghan Senior and Junior will be joined by fellow Todmorden racer Glen Laycock at the high speed, full contact, event, which takes place at Buxton Raceway, in Buxton, Derbyshire.

The Gavaghans' will be competing in their third full season in the sport, while this will be Laycock's first full campaign.

Laycock goes into the season in great form, after already winning The Autumn Nationals Championship, while David Junior will look to build on his 2009 success - when he won The Howard Hunt Trophy And Prize. He also reached Star Grade Red Roof last year, which is the fourth level of roof grading, which is a reflection of racing experience, and means he will start further back on the track than novice drivers.

David Senior will look to continue his steady progress over the last two years, which also resulted in him making Start Grade Red Roof in 2009.

Later in the racing calendar the drivers will be competing at Warton Stock Car Club, near Carnforth, in the joint 1,000 championship with Buxton Raceway, and at Brampton Raceway, near Doncaster, where the winner will receive the King of Dirt trophy.

The drivers will also return to Buxton Raceway in November to race in the sport's showpiece event - the Champions of Champions – and the winner will earn the right to race with a chequered flag on their roof. The chequered roof status is the highest grade that can be achieved at club level and means the driver will start at the very back of the grid.
