Swimming: Records tumble at club galas

TODMORDEN Swimming Club held its senior internal gala, open to all those who swim lengths on Mondays at Todmorden Sports Centre.

Such was the number of entries that the gala went well over time and produced some very competitive swimming with 55 taking part and 20 records being broken.

Lois Shackleton - 7yrs 50m back, breastroke and front crawl and 7/8yrs 25m butterfly - led the way with four records.

Other record breakers were: Nicholas Shaw - 7yrs 50m back and front crawl; Beth Roscoe - 8yrs 50m back, breastroke,and front craw; Matthew Shaw - 9yrs 50m back and front crawl; Seth Gill and Max Gill - jointly 9yrs 25m butterfly; Rebecca Sullivan - 15/16yrs 4x25m IM, 100m back, front crawl and breastroke and 75m butterfly; Dieter Rutkowski - 15/16yrs 100m back and breastroke; and Gemma Sullivan - open age 4x25m IM.

This year the swimming club unveiled a new shield in memory of David Sutcliffe which was handed to the winners of the family relay race.

Four families took part and the winning team was Gemma, Rebecca, Lucy and Deborah Sullivan.

The previous night the club had held its junior in-house gala for those who swim widths on Wednesday and Friday evenings.

A total of 66 children, ranging from four years upwards took part and wight records were broken.

As with the senior gala the following night there was a team relay with the shield, in memory of David Sutcliffe, going to the Eccleshall family - Luke, Ryan, Harry and Ian.

New record holders are: Insiyam Hussain - beginners 10m aided; Ella Wilkinson - improvers 10m back; Ben Godsman - 6yrs 25m front crawl; Jenny Kenworthy - 9yrs 25m front crawl; Ben Roscoe - 6yrs 25m breastroke; and Greg Eaton - 10yrs 25m breastroke.

Front crawl (all 25m): Katie Atkinson, Ben Godsman, Iris Palmer, Giles Bridge, Emily Ruane, Owen Rafter, Charlotte Thwaites, Harry Germon Eccleshall, Katie Howarth, Lewis Rafter. Backstroke (all 25m): Katie Atkinson, Ben Roscoe, Gem Kirwan, Giles Bridge, Aimee Calvert, Owen Rafter, Alicia Harding, Elliot Broxton, Katie Howarth, Lewis Rafter. Breastroke (all 25m): Lucas Broxton, Gem Kirwan, Callum Issitt, Aimee Calvert, Sam Sutcliffe, Lucie Cowley, Elliot Broxton, Sophie Goldie. The club’s presentation and disco will take place on Saturday, January 30 at Todmorden Town Hall, start 7pm.
