Tod head to Bolton with spirits raised

Solid defence for Todmorden Borough from Danny Skwarek and Danny Lively

Todmorden Borough have CMB in their sights on Saturday after a workmanlike 3-1 home win over Furness Cavaliers in heavy conditions last weekend.

Victory over the visitors from Cumbria lifted John Gilford’s side to fifth from bottom of Division Two of the West Lancashire League and a follow up success in Bolton would move them above CMB and possibly another couple of sides.

With Dean Farry, Lee Earnshaw and boss’s son Elliott Gilford all back from injury, things are looking up for Borough.

“We just need some consistency and continued effort,” said Gilford senior, who has targeted a place in the top half of the table by Christmas after a poor start.

“We beat CMB 6-2 at home early doors and I thought they might get some more heavy beatings but they have improved.”

Torrential rain on Friday night left Borough’s Bellholme ground very wet for the contest with Cavaliers but Todmorden made a brisker start than usual and took the lead after 10 minutes.

Good work on the left from Dave Patrick and Danny Lively resulted in Lively shooting into the bottom corner of the net.

Borough stopped playing and Furness equalised from a corner, the ball going in through a crowd of players from the edge of the box after 30 minutes.

Todmorden were having to revert to a long ball game because of the conditions and it paid off just before half time when Oliver Wood latched on to one such delivery and finished one-on-one with the keeper.

The clincher came on the hour when Lively drove forward from fullback and hit a diagonal pass to Farry on the edge of the box. Farry jinked past a defender and toe-poked the ball into the bottom corner.

Wood might have had a penalty with 15 minutes left when Wood drove through and appeared to be brought down but no spot kick was forthcoming.
