Top golfer Dave is homeward bound

DAVE Stafford, one of the area’s top golfers, has confirmed he will be playing only for Todmorden this year and has left West End.

The 45-year-old, who had an excellent 2011, switched to the Halifax club prior to the 2010 season because he wanted to play in the top division of the Halifax-Huddersfield Union’s scratch league.

However, he remained a five-day member at the nine-hole Todmorden club.

“I’ve found travelling up and down the valley all the time a bit too demanding,” said Stafford, who lives in Todmorden where he runs an upholstery and sofa business.

He said he had enjoyed his time at West End, had managed to get his handicap down to one and intended to continue playing in open events at the Halifax club.

Stafford teamed up with Frank Greaves to win the Union’s foursomes title in the latest season, the pair beating Huddersfield’s Brad Tupman and Aaron Schnacke in the final at Outlane.

If Stafford manages a repeat win this year it is likely to be with Michael Murray, who became a rare Union strokeplay champion from Todmorden when successful at Bradley Park at the end of July.

Stafford has been a regular member of Chris Mear’s 12-man Union representative side, and was also one of the better performers for the team in the end-of-season six-man team championship at Forest Park, York.

He admitted he had sounded out Mear to find out whether leaving West End would hit his chances of continued selection.

“He said it wouldn’t affect my chances. He said it was my golf which mattered,” said Stafford.
