Tough Farsley have edge over Hebden
THE weather has played havoc with the West Riding County Women’s Football League and local side Hebden Royd United have not played a league fixture since the end of November last year.
Last Sunday they travelled away to Farsley Celtic Ladies in Leeds.
Farsley nicknamed ‘The Celts’, a word coming from Greek meaning Barbarian, played to their name in an aggressive and strong manner determined to avenge the 4-2 win Hebden had at home in October last year.
Although Farsley were the more physical it was Hebden Royd who controlled the opening exchanges.
They should have taken the lead on seven minutes when Rebecca Payne was put through by Evie Brooksbank but the effort went wide.
Within 10 minutes Payne made up for the miss when in a similar fashion Cait Wrigley put her through.
This time one on one with the keeper, the centre forward made no mistake.
It was Wrigley’s last contribution to the game as she went off with an ankle injury to be replaced by Hannah Jones.
Hebden appeared to be in control of the game and had most of the possession.
But on the half hour confusion at the back led to the ball not being cleared and Wainwright for Farsley equalised with ease.
In goals for Hebden was India Wright and she played a solid half in a position unusual to her.
Hebden created even more chances and Payne had the opportunity to double her personal tally but the score remained 1-1 at half time.
In the second half match fitness showed in Farsley’s favour as Hebden rarely got out of their own half.
Hebden’s back four were constantly under pressure but rode it well and any shots that got past them were gathered ably by Wright.
Farsley’s tactics became more and more physical which unsettled some of the local ladies.
With only five minutes to go to the final whistle a corner for Farsley landed between three defenders and rebounded to a relieved Sarah Carter who hit it with power and precision into the roof of the net to give Farsley the win.
Hebden Royd’s right back Grace Rawnsley was awarded ‘man of the match’.
A draw would have been a fair result it was certainly a game of two halves but Hebden Royd Ladies will have to review their preparation and fitness.
