Joe best for Valley in lakeland ‘drop’

Calder Valley’s short and sharp kings were out in force at the Coniston Gullies race - a contest so stupidly steep that if it wasn’t for the scree and boulder it would be suitable for a cheese-rolling contest.

Celebrated Yorkshire farmer Ted Mason again provided his kamikaze downhill technique to take another victory in this classic tale of lakeland madness, just beating his almost equally unhinged clubmate Sam Watson.

Valley’s Joe Crossfield ran a fine seventh, ahead of Ripponden physio Joe Washington in 13th and Stephen Smithies in 16th.

Calder women’s captain Helen Buchan was a few places ahead of Stainland’s Trevor ‘Super Strength’ Murgatroyd.
